Turn Summer Days into Learning Adventures
July 15, 2026
School may be out for the summer, but learning doesn't have to stop. Our Elementary Curriculum team has put together simple and engaging ways to turn everyday summer activities into meaningful learning opportunities. From reading and exploring to creating and discovering, these ideas will help keep young minds active while making learning fun for the whole family.
Explore the Wonders of the Library
Open the door to imagination, creativity, and discovery with a visit to the Edmonton Public Library. Families can access a wide range of free resources, including books, digital materials, reading challenges, events, contests, and prizes.
With something for every age and interest, the library is a great place to support summer learning and build a lifelong love of reading.
Bring Science and Math Home
Rainy days are the perfect opportunity to explore science and math indoors. Encourage hands-on learning by building forts, bridges, or ramps with everyday materials. Dice games and other family activities can strengthen math skills, build problem-solving abilities, and help children develop confidence with numbers, all while having fun together.
Make Road Trips More Engaging
Heading out on a summer road trip? Travel time can become learning time. Interactive games and activities can spark curiosity, encourage conversation, and help develop language skills while keeping boredom at bay. Check out the video below for ideas that will make the journey just as exciting as the destination.
Get Creative with Chalk
A box of sidewalk chalk can inspire hours of active learning. Try creating obstacle courses, hopscotch games, target challenges, or imaginative play activities like "The Floor Is Lava." Chalk activities help children build physical coordination, practice writing and drawing, develop language skills, and explore their creativity, all while enjoying the outdoors.
Learning Is Everywhere
Summer is filled with opportunities to learn, explore, and grow. Whether you're visiting the library, building a backyard fort, travelling with family, or creating colourful chalk masterpieces, everyday experiences can help keep learning alive all summer long. The best part? Learning is even more meaningful when families do it together.
